One of M Jr’s great aunts gave her a doll the other day – a hand-me-down called Popo-chan who has shiny brown hair and those slightly spooky eyes that roll open and shut depending on what angle you’re holding her at.
Among other things, Popo-chan came with a bed (including talking pillow), a selection of outfits and this unique bonus feature:
Yes, this is the mysterious moh-kohan (蒙古斑 / Mongolian spot) that many East Asian babies are born with, and while the real thing isn’t quite such a garish shade of green, it’s nice to see a children’s toy that reflects such racial particularities. It’s also nice to be able to show you a picture of a Mongolian spot to go with my original description of one last year – M Jr’s has now almost disappeared, and I was reluctant to photograph it, as she might not have been too pleased to discover that her dad had once published a picture of her backside on his blog.
