    1. Thanks Torsten (and for continuing to visit the blog) – I’m glad you liked it!

  1. How poignant. I only met your mother a couple of times when she was with your Dad but I don’t have strong memories other than second hand stories told by relatives.

This was a very revealing and honest memory of your relationship and it was interesting reading it.

We lived for several years in Fukuoka and I always regret not being able to see Mt. Fuji despite several trips north.

    1. Thank you very much for reading, Tony, and for your kind words. A shame you never got to see Mt. Fuji while you were here – it really is elusive, isn’t it! (If you were in Fukuoka, though, I wonder if you ever travelled to Mt. Aso – one of my favourite places in Japan.)

  2. Wonderful piece, I remember your Mum as a very kind and thoughtful woman. We don’t always get to appreciate our parents until they are gone, or indeed until we become parents ourselves.

    1. Thanks for reading, Steve, and for taking the time to leave a comment. You’re spot on re. parenting: becoming a father myself has made me realise all sorts of things about my own parents – who they were as people and how they chose to bring us up – that I was completely unaware of at the time.
