You can picture the scene:
“Guv’nor, we finished the driveway and there’s some tarmac left over. It’d be a shame to waste it, but is there anything else that needs doing?”
“Come to think of it, I’ve always wanted a proper step outside the back door. Do you think you can use it for that?”
“No problem.”
“It’s round here.”
“Okay. We’ll need to make some kind of mould to keep the shape and make it level. And given how high it is, two steps will probably be better than one.”
“I see… Actually, you know what? Just dump it outside the door in a big pile and leave it to dry. That’ll be fine.”
“Er, okay. Are you sure?”
“Yeah, whatever.”
“What about that post box? Do you want me to try and fix it to the wall?”
“Nah. Just chuck it on top of a breeze block when you’re done.”
“Okay, if you say so.”
And voilà! Just like that, one of my neighbours was blessed with some convenient, easy-to-use “steps” outside their back door, not to mention a sturdy and stable post box that the postman (or woman) won’t be in the least bit bothered by when they have use it while bending down and standing on a slope of approximately 45 degrees – particularly when it’s slippery on a winter’s morning, for example.
